The defense mechanism is a pigment called melanin, which is produced by cells in our skin called melanocytes. Melanin absorbs ultraviolet light and dissipates it as heat. Everyone has about the same number of melanocytes, but people vary in how much and what colors of melanin they produce. Darker skinned people have more natural sunscreen at their disposal.
Toxicity also plays into sunburns. Toxic chemicals in the body can aid in the burning of skin from the inside out by coming to the surface. Toxicty of chemical filled sunblocks can make you burn more easily and have known cancer causing chemicals.
Natural sunblocking oils create an aid as a filter. Nothing blocks the suns damaging UV rays better than being covered...but for those of us whom like the suns toasty rays just put on a filter. And atleast reapply hourly to be best protected. Hats, sunglasses, shade, sunglasses, staying hydrated and using a simple natural sun filter of natural oils can keep your skin protected & moisurized yet sun kissed.
